On my recent trip to New York, I was pleased to be entertained by reading poetry on the subway. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority originally developed this program in 2008, and poems are selected in collaboration with the Poetry Society of America.

It would have pleased Walt Whitman, that poet of urban motion, to envision his words coursing by electrified rail through a diverse, global city of 8 million souls.

If this idea appeals, and it seems like an interesting idea, why not consider the Red Room Company’s Poetry Object ? There is a wide range of teaching resources available at this page, including NAPLAN style worksheets, as well as the opportunity to book a workshop  led by a poet.

According to their ‘occasional’ newsletter,

Poetry Object is our national poetry writing competition for students and teachers will be launched on 2 May 2016.

This year with the support of CAL, young poets will find their poems published on trains and banners as we share their work with wider audiences.
