Rhyming the Dead – listening to poetry that bring ideas alive

This great new resource has been created by the Red Room Company who commissioned ten Australian poets to reflect upon a dead poet of their choice and consider how that persons’ life and death has profoundly affected their writing. In Episode 1, Renee Pettitt-Schipp responds to the life and work of Judith Wright. Oodgeroo Noonuccal is also featured in this episode as there is a very tangible link between these two twentieth century poets and their relationship with the landscape, and their shared friendship.

The interview with Pettitt-Schipp provides a very useful exploration of Wright’s concerns and makes excellent supplementary material for HSC Advanced English Module C. The back story for her poem – meeting a tiger shark – outlines a process for writing poetry that would expand student’s understanding of writing in free verse form.
