Short for fanzine or magazine, zines (pronounced zeens) are independently produced alternatives to mainstream publishing and media. They are typically low-tech (handwritten and drawn, photocopied, stapled and made with love) with a small circulation.
Best of all, there is no censorship and people are free to discuss ideas that they share with other like minded souls. I really love the quirkiness of zines and how such unique publications can pop up almost anywhere: coffee shops and cafes, libraries, bus stops …
Zines are also available online – check out a favourite site Sticky Institute
